More information

The heart of present-day Granada, or the lower city, did not emerge after the Reconquista. The old city walls once stood here, and it was a hub of commerce, worship at the Great Mosque, and study at the Madrasa. In fact, emblematic streets like Alcaicería, Zacatín, and Bib-Rambla still bear their names from the past. And it is here that two of the city's most important monuments are located: the Cathedral of the Incarnation and the Royal Chapel. The tour begins in Plaza de las Pasiegas. The Cathedral remains hidden from view; its grandeur is only revealed when standing before its facade in the plaza. It was built on the site of the former Great Mosque, commissioned by Queen Isabella I of Castile. The initial inspiration was the Cathedral of Toledo, but the project was never completed. Years later, Diego de Siloé revived the project, introducing Renaissance elements onto the Gothic foundations. The tour continues along Calle Oficios, where you'll find the Royal Chapel, attached to the Cathedral. Inside are the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs; Joanna the Mad and Philip the Handsome; and the Infante Miguel de Portugal. The Chapel's grand exterior contrasts with the somewhat more austere interior. The Sacristy houses part of the Catholic Monarchs' legacy: a gallery of paintings, works from the Flemish, Italian, and Spanish schools; and items belonging to Queen Isabella I of Castile, including her crown, books, and clothing.
